Saying Goodbye to The Office
The American version of the television show The Office ends its run tonight after 8 years. Can you believe that? EIGHT YEARS! It’s not like we needed something else to make us feel old, but a fact is a fact. A lot of us twenty-somethings have grown into adults with this show. We’ve had relationships begin and bloom with Pam and Jim’s. We have all wished more than anything that our next job will be even 10 percent like working at Dunder Mifflin. Maybe our next boss is as offensive and harmless as Michael Scott, or as goofy and ridiculous as Andy Bernard? Unfortunately this is the real world and I haven’t found a place quite like Dunder Mifflin, have you?
The Office has held a pretty special place in my heart and I’m sad to see it go. One could argue that I met my husband partially due to Michael Scott/Steve Carell.
Back in 2007 we had a mutual friend who in passing told me he had a friend who looked like Michael Scott. I obviously had to meet this guy. So when I say goodbye to the show tonight, I’ll also be saying thank you for playing a small role in finding the love of my life and my best friend (Also, thanks to Chris, our mutual friend who made the fateful comment!).
Almost six years later that look-a-like is my husband. By the way, John will get told he looks like Steve in waves. He’ll go months with no comments and then suddenly have three people tell him in a month. When we moved to NYC three weeks ago a girl randomly told him about his uncanny resemblance on the subway and I felt proud.
I imagine these actors and the character they played, Pam, Jim, Dwight, will have that curse of always being Pam, Jim, and Dwight to people (kind of like how Jason Alexander will always be George Costanza etc.). Is it really that bad though? These are iconic characters that were perfectly executed by the people meant to play them. I think it’s an honor and something they should be proud of.
I guess I just really want to say thank you to the entire cast for giving me, my husband, our friends, and thousands of others something to look forward to every week. Something we can laugh together at and share.
As for the people who didn’t ever watch The Office? You’ve really missed out on some good times.
